British Art Dealer in Dispute Over Return of Banksy Artworks from Italy
John Brandler, an art dealer based in Essex, is currently involved in a legal dispute with the Italian exhibitions company Metamorfosi. The conflict centers around three large Banksy murals that Brandler loaned to the company three years ago. These artworks, which remain on the original walls where they were stenciled, are valued at £15 million and include notable pieces such as "Season’s Greetings," "Heart Boy," and "Computer Robot."
The Dispute
The disagreement began when Metamorfosi reportedly fell behind on the agreed monthly loan payments for the artworks. Brandler claims that the company is now four months overdue on the final payment, and despite the exhibition ending on June 6, the murals have not been returned to him. The initial contract was for two years but was extended for an additional year with a monthly loan fee.
Brandler has expressed skepticism over Metamorfosi's assurances of payment, especially in light of similar claims by another London dealer, Acoris Andipa, who alleges that the company owes him £45,000 for curatorial services. Both dealers have been pursuing legal action to resolve their respective issues.
Statements from Metamorfosi
In response, Metamorfosi, represented by Pietro Folena and Vittorio Faustini, has stated that they have consistently paid the monthly instalments, except for the last one due to pending invoices and tax documentation. They claim they have repeatedly attempted to return the artworks, beginning on June 3, and have pointed out that Brandler acknowledged storage issues and proposed keeping the murals until October at no extra cost.
Metamorfosi insists that they are organizing the return of the murals, which is expected to occur by the end of September. They have emphasized that the commercial matters with Mr. Acoris Andipa are separate from their dealings with Brandler.
