Overview

Welcome to the delightful world of sewing with upcycled fabrics! Today, we'll create a simple tote bag that is not only practical but also sustainable and stylish. This project is fun because it allows you to get creative with fabric combinations while practicing basic stitches. Beginners often slip up by not measuring accurately or choosing fabrics that are too thick, so take your time and enjoy the process.

Materials

  • Upcycled fabric, 1 meter (1 yard) total, ideally from old garments
  • Thread, matching or contrasting, 1 spool
  • Sewing needle (if hand sewing) or sewing machine
  • Fabric scissors
  • Measuring tape or ruler
  • Pins or fabric clips
  • Chalk or fabric marker

Time & Difficulty

  • Total time: 2 hours
  • Active time: 1.5 hours
  • Curing/Drying: Not applicable
  • Difficulty: Beginner

Step-by-Step

  1. Choose your fabrics. Look for sturdy, non-stretch materials like denim or canvas from old clothes.
  2. Measure and cut. Cut two rectangles, each 40 cm x 45 cm (16 in x 18 in), for the bag body.
  3. Prepare the straps. Cut two strips, each 60 cm x 8 cm (24 in x 3 in), for handles.
  4. Fold and press the strap edges. Fold each long edge towards the center, then fold in half and press.
  5. Stitch the straps. Sew along both long edges to secure the folds.
  6. Pin the bag body pieces. Place the fabric rectangles right sides together and pin the sides and bottom.
  7. Sew the bag sides and bottom. Use a straight stitch, leaving a 1 cm (1/2 in) seam allowance.
  8. Box the corners. Flatten each bottom corner into a triangle, sew across 5 cm (2 in) from the point.
  9. Turn the bag right side out. Push the corners out neatly.
  10. Attach the straps. Position each strap end 10 cm (4 in) from the side seams, pin, and sew securely to the inside top edge.
  11. Hem the top edge. Fold the top edge down 2 cm (1 in), press, and sew around to finish.

Pro Tips

  • Press seams as you go to keep your work neat.
  • Use a zigzag stitch on raw edges to prevent fraying.
  • Try mixing different fabric textures for a unique look.

Common Mistakes

  • Skipping the pressing—this can lead to uneven seams.
  • Using stretchy fabrics—they can cause the bag to sag.
  • Not reinforcing the straps—double stitch for strength.

Safety Notes

  • Always cut fabric away from your body to avoid injury.
  • Keep fingers clear of the needle when using a sewing machine.
  • Use sharp scissors to prevent fraying and uneven cuts.

Cleanup & Storage

  • Store leftover fabric scraps for future projects.
  • Clean your sewing machine after use to maintain performance.
  • Organize your sewing supplies for easy access next time.

Next Exercises

  • Make a patchwork pillow using smaller fabric scraps.
  • Create a drawstring pouch for organizing accessories.
  • Sew a simple apron with pockets for household tasks.
