In this tutorial, you will learn how to create a wheel-thrown cup using stoneware clay. We will cover centering the clay, pulling the walls, and trimming the base to achieve a refined form. Step-by-Step
- Wedge the clay to remove air bubbles.
- Center the clay on the wheel using consistent pressure.
- Create an opening in the clay with your thumbs.
- Pull the walls by supporting with one hand inside and the other outside.
- Shape the cup using a potter's rib for a smooth surface.
- Trim the excess clay from the base with a wooden tool.
- Use a needle tool to level the rim.
- Let the cup dry to leather-hard stage under a plastic bag.
- Flip the cup and trim the foot with a wooden tool.
- Smooth the foot with a damp sponge.
- Allow the cup to dry completely before bisque firing.
Troubleshooting
- If clay wobbles, re-center before pulling walls.
- If walls collapse, use less water and refine your pulling technique.
- If cracks appear, ensure even wall thickness and control drying speed.
Cleanup & Storage
- Wipe down the wheel and tools with a damp sponge.
