Overview

In this tutorial, you will learn how to create a wheel-thrown cup using stoneware clay. We will cover centering the clay, pulling the walls, and trimming the base to achieve a refined form. This exercise will enhance your foundational skills in wheel throwing and prepare you for more complex projects.

Materials

  • Stoneware clay (1–2 lbs)
  • Pottery wheel
  • Water container
  • Potter's rib
  • Wooden trimming tool
  • Wire cutter
  • Sponge
  • Needle tool
  • Plastic bag

Time & Difficulty

  • Time: 2 hours
  • Difficulty: Intermediate

Step-by-Step

  1. Wedge the clay to remove air bubbles.
  2. Center the clay on the wheel using consistent pressure.
  3. Create an opening in the clay with your thumbs.
  4. Pull the walls by supporting with one hand inside and the other outside.
  5. Shape the cup using a potter's rib for a smooth surface.
  6. Trim the excess clay from the base with a wooden tool.
  7. Use a needle tool to level the rim.
  8. Let the cup dry to leather-hard stage under a plastic bag.
  9. Flip the cup and trim the foot with a wooden tool.
  10. Smooth the foot with a damp sponge.
  11. Allow the cup to dry completely before bisque firing.

Troubleshooting

  • If clay wobbles, re-center before pulling walls.
  • If walls collapse, use less water and refine your pulling technique.
  • If cracks appear, ensure even wall thickness and control drying speed.

Cleanup & Storage

  • Wipe down the wheel and tools with a damp sponge.
  • Store unused clay in a sealed plastic bag.
  • Clean water containers and sponges.

Next Exercises

  • Create a matching saucer for your cup.
  • Experiment with decorative slip trailing.
